Why Are Your AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates Labeled as Level III?
Spartan AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. Level III+ indicates special threat testing and was created by the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While Spartan AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic steel and have been special threat tested to level III+. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label AR550 single curve full coat plates as level III even though they are capable of higher ballistic protection.

We’ve taken our Level III Body Armor to a NEW level! Spartan Armor Systems™ is pleased to introduce our AR550 Body Armor! With a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness, our level III+ AR550 armor defeats higher velocity threats such as XM193, M855, and M80! We’re special rifle threat validated!
Our AR550 armor hits the “sweet spot” in the Brinnell Hardness (BHN) range. With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found our ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius. With a 10% increase in core hardness, this ballistic grade steel is much harder than AR500, but not too hard to cause severe stress while forming.
Advanced Triple Curve (ATC) AR550 Spartan Body Armor. An industry FIRST! Spartan Armor Systems™ is proud to be the FIRST in the industry to commercially offer triple-curved AR550 body armor. With higher velocity rifle threats commonly present throughout the United States, we’ve developed this AR550 armor to specifically defeat some common threats such as 5.56 x 45 XM193, 5.56 x 45 M855 /SS109 and 7.62 x 51 (.308 Winchester) at a rated velocity of 3,100 fps or less. Spartan Armor Systems® has literally taken Level III-rated body armor to the next level by adding a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness to their AR550 line of armor. Because of this enhancement, our AR550 level III+ body armor offers operators advanced rifle-rated threat protection and has been special threat validated in an independent NIJ credentialed laboratory. Manufactured and tested within the highest quality standards, utilizing laboratory-certified steel, our single curve, full coat AR550 plates have received NIJ Certification under NIJ 0101.06 level III specifications. For added peace of mind, every plate of armor sold by Spartan Armor Systems® is serialized allowing it to be easily tracked back to the original plate of steel it was cut from should there be any question as to its ballistic properties.
Protective Value Added
We understand the NIJ rating system can be confusing. Simply put, our AR550 body armor is certified as NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating. Battle Hardened
Our AR550 armor hits the “sweet spot” in the Brinell Hardness (BHN) range. With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found that the ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use when manufacturing our AR550 armor is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius, it’s much harder than AR500, but not so hard that it risks incurring severe stress while undergoing the formation process.
Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting in order to protect the ballistic integrity of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
Additional Protection: Full Coat or Base Coat Options
We strongly recommend choosing our full coat option when you buy steel core body armor. Our proprietary plate coating, Encapsaloc™, is a potentially life-saving feature that captures spalling as a result of ballistic impacts on the strike face of the steel core armor plate. Do not settle for steel armor that is merely coated with generic truck bed liner spray coatings that have not been tested for ballistic efficacy. The strike face of our Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Body Armor plates proudly bears the mark of our Spartan logo.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The base coat option only provides protection against corrosion and offers little to no fragmentation/spall mitigation. Should you choose to select base coat plates, please consider adding our Spall Containment Sleeve (sold separately) as a means of fragmentation mitigation.

Sleek, lightweight, and ready to move, the Swimmers Cut Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 Body Armor affords operators with increased mobility, a decrease in overall weight. The “Swimmers Cut” gets its name from the improved range of motion in the shoulders due to the angle of cut in the top corners of the plate. This allows for a lighter and less obstructive body armor plate while still providing coverage for vital organs. Swimmers Cut Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 Body Armor is constructed from lab certified AR500 ballistic grade steel, (¼” thickness) and these body armor plates provide the operator with Level III protection in accordance with NIJ0101.06 standards. You have the choice of getting our Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 Body Armor formed on a continual radius die. Or with our Advanced Triple Curve ™. Instead of bending our formed plates in 2 different locations as we used to, we have machined custom tooling to give these plates a nice curvature to best conform to the side of your torso. Spartan Armor Systems™ is proud to be the FIRST in the industry to commercially offer triple-curved Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 Body Armor. Spartan Armor Systems’ ATC™ body armor allows the operator to shoulder their weapon with the most freedom and limited discomfort. The ATC™ armor better “hugs” the operator’s body, resulting in a significant increase in comfort. Our CNC equipment capabilities have allowed us to create dies which form our body armor without any “crease” bends. Crease bends, “work hardens” the plate and causes a significant amount of stress to the portion of the plate under load. We HIGHLY suggest when doing research to ask if they crease bend their body armor. This process results in increased potential for plate fatigue and failure, which is why Spartan Armor Systems™ has gone the extra mile to create this die process.

Full Coat or Base Coat Options:
We are excited to announce our potentially “life saving” breakthrough! The strike face for our plates is mark embedded with our Spartan logo! Both sides of these plates are coated, however, the back side only has a “courtesy coat” to protect against wear and rust. The front of the plate is lined with 1/4-3/8 of our proprietary coating, Encapsaloc ™. The result is a plate approximately 1/2-5/8” total thickness. See our FAQ for more information about our Encapsaloc ™ process. By purchasing, you will receive (2) Formed Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 Body Armor 10″x12” chest plates. Due to popular demand, we have added a “base coat” only option for our AR500 Omega™ armor products. The base coat option has an extremely thin layer of our fragmentation mitigation coating to aesthetically enhance the plates, and to provide corrosion resistance. Our AR550 body armor is NIJ level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating. NIJ Certification applies to AR550 Shooters and Swimmers Cut Single Curve Full Coat armor plates.
Why Are Your AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates Labeled as Level III?
Spartan AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. Level III+ indicates special threat testing and was created by the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While Spartan AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic steel and have been special threat tested to level III+. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label AR550 single curve full coat plates as level III even though they are capable of higher ballistic protection.
The Hydra Plate Carrier is a highly adaptable carrier ideal for quick deployment and emergency situations such as active shooter scenarios. Easily adjustable buckles ensure a snug and comfortable fit on the sides. Ample length shoulder straps allow the Hydra plate carrier to be easily adjusted to fit a wide variety of body types. Breathable mesh is used at chest, back and shoulder contact points to allow for maximum breathability. Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting to protect the ballistic integrity throughout the entirety of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
Additional Protection: Full Coat or Base Coat Options
We strongly recommend choosing our full coat option when you buy steel core body armor. Our proprietary plate coating, Encapsaloc™, is a potentially life-saving feature that captures spalling as a result of ballistic impacts on the strike face of the steel core armor plate. Do not settle for steel armor that is merely coated with generic truck bed liner spray coatings that have not been tested for ballistic efficacy. Product Overview
Spartan Armor Systems® strives to afford their customers and operators in the field with the highest quality body armor and every advantage possible. Spartan Armor Systems® Spall Containment Sleeves provide an extra layer of protection from fragmentation (spalling) and a high degree of confidence when wearing our Base Coat or Full Coat Spartan™ Omega™ AR500 and AR550 Steel Core body armor plates. These spall containment sleeves will reduce or potentially eliminate spalling as projectiles ricochet off the AR Plate, effectively containing such fragments within layers of Aramid Fibers and the rugged 1000D Cordura Ballistic Nylon Casing.
Added Shielding
Spalling is a reality of steel core plates that do not have a means of mitigation such as our Encapsaloc™ fragmentation mitigation coating. It’s the nature of high-velocity ballistic impacts and it is unavoidable. However, it is possible to add spall mitigation to base coat plates after the fact, or even increase the level of mitigation for full coat plates. The Spartan Armor Systems® Spall Containment Sleeve effectively helps shield the operator against spalling and fragmentation in an engagement by capturing the small projectiles within the highly flexible and durable ballistic nylon casing composed of 1000D Cordura fabric. Boiled down, the Spartan Armor Systems® Spall Containment Sleeve is another level of shielding and protection you can opt to carry into battle without adding any noticeable weight to your loadout.

Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting to protect the ballistic integrity throughout the entirety of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
Additional Protection: Full Coat or Base Coat Options
We strongly recommend choosing our full coat option when you buy steel core body armor. Our proprietary plate coating, Encapsaloc™, is a potentially life-saving feature that captures spalling as a result of ballistic impacts on the strike face of the steel core armor plate. Spartan Armor Systems® has literally taken Level III-rated body armor to the next level by adding a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness to their AR550 line of armor. Because of this enhancement, our AR550 level III+ body armor offers operators advanced rifle-rated threat protection and has been special threat validated in an independent NIJ credentialed laboratory. Manufactured and tested within the highest quality standards, utilizing laboratory-certified steel, our single curve, full coat AR550 plates have received NIJ Certification under NIJ 0101.06 level III specifications. For added peace of mind, every plate of armor sold by Spartan Armor Systems® is serialized allowing it to be easily tracked back to the original plate of steel it was cut from should there be any question as to its ballistic properties.
Protective Value Added
We understand the NIJ rating system can be confusing. Simply put, our AR550 body armor is certified as NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating, click here to learn more. AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. “Level III+” indicates that special threat testing was created within the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high-velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic grade steel and have been special threat tested to attain the level III+ qualification. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates as “Level III” even though they are capable of providing the operator with a higher degree of ballistic protection.
Battle Hardened
Our AR550 armor hits the “sweet spot” in the Brinell Hardness (BHN) range. With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found that the ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use when manufacturing our AR550 armor is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius, it’s much harder than AR500, but not so hard that it risks incurring severe stress while undergoing the formation process.

Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Body Armor Swimmers Cut body armor is specifically designed to feature a streamlined cut, which reduces overall weight, enhances mobility, comfort, and ergonomics in the field while affording this higher degree of threat protection. As with our other AR550 body armor products, Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Body Armor Swimmers Cut body armor has literally taken Level III-rated body armor to the next level by adding a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness to their AR550 line of armor. Because of this enhancement, our AR550 level III+ body armor offers operators advanced rifle-rated threat protection and has been special threat validated in an independent NIJ credentialed laboratory. Manufactured and tested within the highest quality standards, utilizing laboratory-certified steel, our single curve, full coat AR550 plates have received NIJ Certification under NIJ 0101.06 level III specifications.
Protective Value Added
We understand the NIJ rating system can be confusing. Simply put, our AR550 body armor is certified as NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating, click here to learn more. AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. “Level III+” indicates that special threat testing was created within the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high-velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic grade steel and have been special threat tested to attain the level III+ qualification. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates as “Level III” even though they are capable of providing the operator with a higher degree of ballistic protection.
Battle Hardened
Our AR550 armor hits the “sweet spot” in the Brinell Hardness (BHN) range. With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found that the ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use when manufacturing our AR550 armor is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius, it’s much harder than AR500, but not so hard that it risks incurring severe stress while undergoing the formation process.
Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting in order to protect the ballistic integrity of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. Born of numerous customer inquiries and feedback, we developed the Sentinel Legion XL Plate Carrier to be adjustable from a 2XL-4XL size. The Sentinel Legion XL weighs in at approximately 3lbs. 9oz., will hold our Steel Core AR500 Omega and AR550 11”x14” body armor plates, while also offering the option to add in 6"x6" or 6"x8" side plates. If you don't want to run the Sentinel Legion XL with the cummerbund - no sweat! The cummerbund is easily removable so you can run your plate carrier with just the front and back plates or the full set-up with side plates.

Spartan Armor Systems® has literally taken Level III-rated body armor to the next level by adding a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness to their AR550 line of armor. Because of this enhancement, our AR550 level III+ body armor offers operators advanced rifle-rated threat protection and has been special threat validated in an independent NIJ credentialed laboratory. Manufactured and tested within the highest quality standards, utilizing laboratory-certified steel, our single curve, full coat AR550 plates have received NIJ Certification under NIJ 0101.06 level III specifications. For added peace of mind, every plate of armor sold by Spartan Armor Systems® is serialized allowing it to be easily tracked back to the original plate of steel it was cut from should there be any question as to its ballistic properties.
Protective Value Added
We understand the NIJ rating system can be confusing. Simply put, our AR550 body armor is certified as NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating. AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. “Level III+” indicates that special threat testing was created within the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high-velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic grade steel and have been special threat tested to attain the level III+ qualification. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates as “Level III” even though they are capable of providing the operator with a higher degree of ballistic protection.
Battle Hardened
Our AR550 armor hits the “sweet spot” in the Brinell Hardness (BHN) range. With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found that the ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use when manufacturing our AR550 armor is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius, it’s much harder than AR500, but not so hard that it risks incurring severe stress while undergoing the formation process.
Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting in order to protect the ballistic integrity of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
Additional Protection: Full Coat or Base Coat Options
We strongly recommend choosing our full coat option when you buy steel core body armor. Our proprietary plate coating, Encapsaloc™, is a potentially life-saving feature that captures spalling as a result of ballistic impacts on the strike face of the steel core armor plate. Do not settle for steel armor that is merely coated with generic truck bed liner spray coatings that have not been tested for ballistic efficacy. Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting to protect the ballistic integrity throughout the entirety of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The base coat option only provides protection against corrosion and offers little to no fragmentation/spall mitigation. Should you choose to select base coat plates, please consider adding our Spall Containment Sleeve (sold separately) as a means of fragmentation mitigation.

With a core hardness of approximately 545-560 BHN, we have found our ballistically rated variant of AR550 that we use is perfect for defeating higher velocity threats, while not exposing the armor plate to extreme stress due to forming.
Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius. With a 10% increase in core hardness, this ballistic grade steel is much harder than AR500, but not too hard to cause severe stress while forming.
With higher velocity rifle threats commonly present throughout the United States, we’ve developed this AR550 armor to specifically defeat some common threats such as 5.56 x 45 XM193, 5.56 x 45 M855 /SS109 and 7.62 x 51 (.308 Winchester) at a rated velocity of 3,100 fps or less. Additionally, we’ve successfully defeated these threat profiles from Close Quarters Battle (CQB) distances…repeatedly!

Product Overview
Spartan Armor Systems® has literally taken Level III-rated body armor to the next level by adding a 10% increase in ballistic core hardness to their AR550 line of armor. Because of this enhancement, our AR550 level III+ body armor offers operators advanced rifle-rated threat protection and has been special threat validated in an independent NIJ credentialed laboratory. Manufactured and tested within the highest quality standards, utilizing laboratory-certified steel, our single curve, full coat AR550 plates have received NIJ Certification under NIJ 0101.06 level III specifications. For added peace of mind, every plate of armor sold by Spartan Armor Systems® is serialized allowing it to be easily tracked back to the original plate of steel it was cut from should there be any question as to its ballistic properties.
Protective Value Added
We understand the NIJ rating system can be confusing. Simply put, our AR550 body armor is certified as NIJ (National Institute of Justice) level III rated but has undergone special threat testing to achieve a level III+ rating. AR550 Single Curve, Full Coat body armor plates are labeled as level III on the back of the plate as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) does not currently have a level III+ rating. “Level III+” indicates that special threat testing was created within the body armor industry to fill the void between NIJ 0101.06 level III and NIJ level IV, specifically to account for high-velocity penetrator rounds such as M855 (aka green tips). While AR550 single curve full coat plates are certified as NIJ level III, rest assured they are made from AR550 ballistic grade steel and have been special threat tested to attain the level III+ qualification. Quite simply, the NIJ requires that we label Spartan Armor Systems® AR550 Single Curve Full Coat Plates as “Level III” even though they are capable of providing the operator with a higher degree of ballistic protection.

Our AR550 Level III+ armor has our GEN2 lower cut radius, it’s much harder than AR500, but not so hard that it risks incurring severe stress while undergoing the formation process.
Laser Cut to Protect Ballistic Integrity
All steel core body armor is cut and shaped after the ballistic properties have been formulated within the steel. While other steel body armor manufacturers commonly use plasma torch cutting that applies excessive heat (25,000 ˚C / 45,000 ˚F) to a wide portion of the steel plate, Spartan Armor Systems® only utilizes laser cutting in order to protect the ballistic integrity of each steel core body armor plate we manufacture. Plasma cutting also requires grinding to clean up the edges after the fact, resulting in increased heat and possible fatigue. At Spartan Armor Systems®, we maintain the highest production integrity and quality standards every step of the way for our customers because we know what is at stake.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The base coat option only provides protection against corrosion and offers little to no fragmentation/spall mitigation. Should you choose to select base coat plates, please consider adding our Spall Containment Sleeve (sold separately) as a means of fragmentation mitigation.

Predator Armor Level III+ Body Armor is manufactured in the U.S. using ballistic grade steel and has the option for a kevlar lined spall and fragmentation protective layer. Our plates use a unique heat-treating, quenching and tempering process that results in an extra hardened steel. Predator Armor plates are lightweight, impact-resistant steel that hold superior ballistic properties. This allows us to use thinner plates without sacrificing protection levels.
All of our plates come with a base coat that aesthetically enhances the plate as well as provides durable characteristics. This coating does not provide fragmentation mitigation. You have the option to add kevlar lining to your plate. This provides anti spall and frag characteristics. It also enhances the performance of your plate. If your carrier does not have anti frag characteristics it is strongly advised to include the kevlar lining.
